A rectangular panel of woven HDPE that filters direct sun instead of sealing the space off. Air moves straight through the mesh, so the shade underneath stays noticeably cooler than it would under a solid sheet. Fifteen sizes run from a 2 x 2 m square to a 5 x 5 m spread.
Solid covers trap warm air below them and the space turns stuffy by midday. Mesh with gaps in it cuts the glare and lets warm air escape upward. Wind behaves better too, passing through the mesh rather than tugging at your fixings.
Cool shade you can sit in for hours without the space heating up.
Start by tensioning the four corners, then work along each side so the panel does not bow in the middle. Fix it above a seating corner, across two posts, down the edge of a balcony or low over a vegetable patch. Once the warm months are over, hose it off and leave it to dry right through before it goes into storage.
Measure the gap and order the size that covers it.
